YouTube Thumbnail Downloader is a free tool that runs entirely in your browser. This page explains what we do — and do not — collect when you use it.
The short version
- The thumbnail images are fetched by your browser, directly from YouTube's CDN (
img.youtube.com). They never pass through or get stored on any server of ours. - We do not require an account and never ask for your name, email, or any personal information to use the tool.
- We use privacy-friendly, anonymized analytics to understand aggregate usage so we can improve the tool.
- We collect no images and never ask for your name or email. The only location data is your approximate country and city, derived from your IP address for aggregate statistics.
Analytics we collect
We use Mixpanel, a third-party analytics service, to record a small set of interaction events. We do not set advertising cookies or build user profiles. The events we send are:
- Thumbnail lookups — the public 11-character YouTube video ID you looked up, the URL format used, and the interface language.
- Failed lookups — whether an input was empty or invalid (never the raw text you typed).
- Downloads — which resolution (e.g. Max HD, HQ) was downloaded.
- Unavailable resolutions — when a requested size does not exist for a video.
- Approximate location — your country and city, which Mixpanel derives from your IP address. We use this only for aggregate geographic statistics, never to identify you.
These events are tied only to a random, anonymous Mixpanel identifier — never to your name, email, or account. Your IP address is used by Mixpanel to derive your approximate location (country and city); we use that location only in aggregate and cannot use these events to contact you or single you out. Mixpanel processes this data on our behalf under its own privacy policy.
What we never collect
- The thumbnail images themselves — they load directly from YouTube to your device.
- The raw URL text you paste (only the parsed public video ID is recorded).
- Your name, email address, or any account or contact details.
- Payment information — the tool is free with nothing to buy.
Local storage on your device
Two small values are stored in your browser's localStorage and never leave your device except as
described above: your light/dark theme preference, and an anonymous Mixpanel identifier used to
de-duplicate events. Clearing your browser storage removes both.
How to opt out
You can prevent analytics from loading by enabling your browser's tracking protection or "Do Not Track"
setting, using a content blocker that blocks mixpanel.com, or disabling JavaScript (the tool's core
download function still works without analytics). You can also contact us to request that we not process your usage data.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete data relating to you, or to object to its processing. Because the analytics we collect are anonymous and not tied to your identity, we typically cannot locate data about a specific individual — but you are welcome to reach out with any request or question.
